The Art of Movement: Last Chance Move!

While the number of days for "nice weather" are winding down for some people, this might be your last chance to try something outdoors. Many non-traditional outdoor physical activities can increase your bpms’ and exercise muscles that you never knew you had. Just be careful... the next morning soreness might hit you hard!

Getting active can come in all kinds of forms...the important thing is to get out and move! Here are some great ways that can get you outside, moving and staying fit:

  1. Parkour

The art of movement by travelling from one point to another across various complex environments. Simply put... absolutely great for staying fit! One can easily burn 300-600 calories in an hour, depending what is done throughout the duration of the workout. Michael Scott would be really impressed.

  1. Skateboarding

Now no need to have the skill level of Tony Hawk to get a good sweat from this sport. By just moderately pushing your self on a skateboard you can burn up to 300 calories in an hour, not to mention getting that heart rate up. Many cities nowadays have skateparks that can be utilize for this high functioning activity. For the little more advanced skateboarder expect a lot more sweat and maybe a few bruises.

  1. Calisthenics

Ever watch an Instagram video of people holding up their whole-body weight to create a "human flag"...well, that's calisthenics- one aspect anyway. This sport requires immense concentration and body strength. This form of fitness mixes gymnastics style exercises with some common style gym workouts. With a wide range of routines that can be done at home, the more intense side of the sport can be found on the playground... playground for adults. These jungle gyms consist of high bars, parallel bars, rings, and many more calisthenic-type equipment that will get your heart racing and muscles aching.

  1. Rock Climbing/Bouldering

One of the more non-traditional workouts that people see on social media to get their anxiety up... BUT no need to be 50 feet off the ground, harnessless, to get your rock on! Plenty of parks, conservation areas, outdoor rock-climbing walls (man-made) can provide hillside fun for SAFE climbing. Just 30 minutes of climbing can burn 300-500 calories, this underrated sport may just be activity to test your physical and mental strength.

Bonus Activity

Surfing

For all you lucky athletes and fitness enthusiasts that can enjoy beach weather in December- Surfing is a great way to enjoy the outdoors while working out your core and lower body, not to mention it's extremely fun! Navigating through the wave and having the ability to balance yourself takes a good amount of strength, therefore it is reflected on the calorie burn. Just a 1-hour session alone can help you burn up to 300 calories.

One benefit to all these activities is that they can be done by yourself or with a small group of friends OUTDOORS. With COVID-19 keeping everyone indoors, this might be a great way to get out and exercise in a safer and more protected environment.
